A 2002 study by the California Department of Education cites a definite relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement inside the California school system. According to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin, "This statewide study provides compelling evidence that the physical well-being of students has a direct impact on their ability to achieve academically. We now have the proof we've been looking for. Students achieve best when they are physically fit. Thousands of years ago, the Greeks understood the importance of improving spirit, mind, and body. The research presented here validates their philosophic approach with scientific validation."

The study goes onto talk about the results from studying the academic scores and levels of physical fitness of fifth, seventh and ninth graders. Math scores were more elevated than reading scores as the levels of fitness improved. If students met satisfactory fitness levels in the three areas measured, they also showed the greatest academic achievement levels, according to the report. Females, showed particularly greater gains over males at the higher levels of physical fitness in corresponding with academic success.
