Mental Health Articles
Mental health matters to all of us. According to a 2006 National
Institute of Mental Health government study, one-quarter of the
U. S. population, ages 18 years and over, in any given year suffers
from a diagnosable mental disorder.
| This translates to almost 58 million people.

Even though these numbers are astounding, they are not as grim
as they seem. Even though a quarter of the population is walking
around with some form of diagnosable mental disorder, only 6-percent
have a serious mental illness. This still translates to approximately
15 million people. For ages 15 - 44 mental disorders are the leading
cause of disabilities in the U. S. and Canada.
What kind of mental disorders are we talking about? Well, approximately
21 million people have been diagnosed with some form of mood disorder,
not including major depressive disorder. Those with major depressive
disorder who are 18 years or older account for 14.8 million people
in a given year.
What about the other major disorders? In any given year in the
U. S. there are in the 18 and older population, 5.7 million bi-polar,
2.4 million schizophrenic, 2.2 million obsessive compulsive, 7.7
million post-traumatic stress, 8.5 million eating disorder and 4.5
million Alzheimer's cases. And, this is not to mention all the other
diagnosable mental health disorders.
