What is stress, though? Stress is basically the opposite of relaxation where both physiological and psychological stimulation are triggered by an emotional upset causing a physiological response such as increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, irritability, muscular tension, anxiety and depression.

Short-term stress are usually events of short duration like getting stuck in traffic, being short-staffed at work or stubbing one's toe. Short-term stress, if intense enough may even provoke the fight-or-flight syndrome in some people. But, rarely does short-term stress have long-term consequences on a person's health or wellbeing.

Long-term stress, on the other hand, may have long-term consequences on one's heath and wellbeing. Stressors like personal illness or injury, divorce or separation, spending time in jail, or even pregnancy can cause serious physiological changes to occur in one's body that may have negative long-term consequences. Heart disease, immunological diseases, diabetes, asthma and even cancer have been linked to long-term stress.

So, what are the biggest stressors in life? Events such as a long-term illness or personal injury, death of a loved one, divorce, incarceration, marriage, pregnancy and retirement are at the top of the list.

If stress is the opposite of relaxation, then is relaxation the cure for stress? Yes! Relaxation is key to gaining relief from stress. So is eating right, exercising, sleeping more, socializing, taking up a hobby, compromising and helping others. All of these things can help reduce stress in daily life and fend off stress when stressful life events do occur.
