Tobacco Health Articles

Tobacco health articles are featured on this page not only as a cautionary tale against smoking but also to provide solid information about tobacco as it relates to health so that as adults we can make informed decisions concerning our health.

According to a U. S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) 1999 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), approximately 35-percent of those in high school use some form of tobacco.

The study defines the tobacco used is either cigarettes, smokeless, cigars, pipes, bidis, or kreteks. In middle school, 12.8 percent used the same tobacco products as those in high school. The study also found that African American middle school students smoked at the same rate as Caucasian students, but African American high school students smoked less than their White counterparts.

According to a 2005 study by the US Children's Environmental Health Center, second-hand smoke has been linked to children's lower performance in school. One to two point declines were noted in children per unit of cotinine contained in the cigarette smoke. According to Dr. Kimberly Yolton who studied the findings, "These declines may not be clinically meaningful for an individual child, but they have huge implications for our society because millions of children are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke."

In another CDC study in 2005, nearly 450 million deaths worldwide were predicted from tobacco use over the next 50 years. Even though recent lawsuits against the big tobacco companies have taken a bite out of their advertising budgets, smoking rates are only slowly subsiding. In 2003, 22.1 percent of adults smoked, which is down only about 0.4 from the 2002. Kentucky is one of the worst performing states when it comes to declining smoking rates as 31-percent of the adults there smoke.

On this tobacco health articles page we will carry additional information about tobacco use and its health implications. Who knows, an ounce of education may be worth a pound of cure.
